Hadith about friendship

All of us know that humans are social creatures by nature, and the proof of this is the presence of friendship in our lives. We are here to know about Hadith about friendship and know the limits of friendship in Islam. Hadith about friendship is our window to know everything about this strong relationship. Before taking an example of Hadith about friendship, we have to know what does Islam says about friendship.

What does Islam say about friendship?

In our lives, all of us love to form strong relationships with others; so that we can overcome solitude. Islam has explained everything about friendship in terms of how to choose a good friend, the rights of friends, and their characteristics. Friendship has mentioned many times by Allah in the Holy Quran, and by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is Sunnah. We will learn both the verses and the Hadiths to know the greatness of this relationship in Islam. Allah Almighty said in Surah Zukhruf:  

بسم االله الرحمن الرحیم

 الأخلاءُ يومئذٍ بعضهم لبعضٍ عدوٌّ إلا المتقين

 

The translation of this Verse is:

“On that day, friends will be one another’s enemies, except for the Godwary.” (43:67) This is one Verse of many Verses that describes how important a good friend is. We will also have an example of Hadith about Friendship, but now we will know how to choose your friend.

How to choose a friend:

Islam has set the characteristics of a righteous friend; so that we can make the right choice. A closer look at the friend’s choice prevents us from regretting after that. While choosing the right friend, we have to choose him\her with good mannerism and behavior. Meanwhile, our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) has advised us to avoid bad companions with bad manners, such as lying, hypocrisy, deception, and miserliness. As Muslims, we shouldn’t take our intimate friends from non-Muslims and this doesn’t contradict the good treatment of non-Muslims. Now it is time to know the specifications of a good friend to make it easier for us.

Goof friend specifications:

Islam has put some of these characteristics for choosing a good friend. 1. He must be intelligent. 2. He must be a believer. 3. He must be honest. 4. Must be tolerant.
A friend has rights:
A friend has rights and duties, and we will mention some of these rights that were mentioned in Quran and Sunnah. 1. Must be appreciated, and their privacy must be respected. 2. Material and moral assistance when needed. 3. Offering helpful advice. 4. Their mistakes must be forgiven. 5. Covering their mistakes. 6. Caring for them and giving gifts to them at the time of illness. 7. Attending their funeral. These are some but not all the rights that have to be given to a friend. Now it is time to have an example of Hadith about friendship. Hadith about friendship:

قال رسول االله صلى االله علیه وسلم:

“الرجل على دین خلیله، فلینظر أحدكم من یخالل.”

حدیث صحیح رواه ابو دوود والترمذي.

The transliteration of the Hadith is: Arragol ala din khalilih, fal yanzor ahadokom man yokhalil.
The translation of the Hadith is:
Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “Man is influenced by the Faith of his friends. Therefore, be careful of whom you befriend.” Narrated by Abu Dawud Tirmidhi.
Simple explanation of the Hadith:
As we said before, friendship is one of the best relationships in the World. And this great Hadith about friendship describes the need to reflect on the choice of our friends; in order to love them and give them complete confidence.
