What every Muslim has to know about Taraweeh prayers

What is your knowledge about Taraweeh prayers?

Taraweeh prayers are the prayers that are done in Ramadan in the Mosque (may be at home). These Taraweeh prayers are started on the first night of Ramadan, and are done in the sets of 2 Rakaat. What is the meaning of “Taraweeh” ? Taraweeh is an Arabic word, comes from the word “Raha” which means taking a rest. It is named Taraweeh as people used to take a rest after every 4 Rakaat. If we want to know more about Taraweeh prayers, we have to ask about it and its meaning. As we said before, Taraweeh prayers are started on the first night of Ramadan after Isha prayer. This comfortable prayer is considered Sunnah mu’akkadah. But it is important to say that the 5 Fard prayers are obliged to be prayed, but Taraweeh prayers are not. This doesn’t mean ignoring these valuable prayers, as it has many benefits and rewards. Our beloved Prophet Muhammed (SAW) has prayed 11 Rakaa, 8 of them were Qiyam al lail, and the last 3 Rakaat was witr prayer.

How to pray Taraweeh prayers?

When our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was asked about night prayer, he said: “prayers at night are offered by two followed by two. Then, if you fear Dawn will come, pray Witr with one”. (al Bukhari and Muslim). So, these prayers were prayed in the set of 2, which means that we pray 2 Rakaat, followed by 2, then take a rest. Then complete the 8 Rakaat (2 followed by 2), and finally, we have to end with 3 Rakaat of Witr prayer. All of the above Rakaat are after Isha prayer.

What is the benefit of Taraweeh prayers?

Allah will reward who pray these prayers and record Hasanaat for him as our prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever prays qiyam with the imam until he finishes, Allah will record for him the qiyam of a (whole) night.”

There are different opinions about the number of Taraweeh prayers:

● 11 Rakaat (8+3 Witr prayer), most Hadith scholars confirm this opinion. ● 23 Rakaat (20+3 Witr prayer). ● 39 Rakaat (36+3 Witr prayer). These differences in opinions don’t make any problem. Islam is the religion of ease, that make you free to do what you want and what you can do. But the logic is that, the Quality is better than the Quantity in any worship in Islam.

Taraweeh Hadith:

There are many Hadith that are mentioned concerning this prayer. One of these important Hadiths is when Abu Hurairah said I heard Allah’s Apostle saying regarding Ramadan, “Whoever prayed at night in it out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.” What a Great reward from Allah, we have to try taking this Golden opportunity to get the reward from Allah and also to get his satisfaction.
